Mamas on Bedrest: The Affordable Care Act (ACA) Stands!

June 29th, 2012

In a landmark decision, The US Supreme Court voted 5-4 to uphold the Affordable Care Act in its entirety. This is a HUGE decision as most political analysts thought that the high court would uphold the act, but strike down the individual mandate-the part of the act that requires people to purchase health insurance or be fined.

In this video blog, I address how the Affordable Care Act will impact (positively) mamas on bed rest, their babies and any older children they may have. While there are many political, financial, cultural and other implications, one cannot deny the fact that if women can continue to receive prenatal care while pregnant, on bed rest and experiencing complications without the fear of losing health care, this is a good thing. If parents of a preterm infant can know, without a shadow of a doubt that their infant will get all the health care that he/she needs and never be denied health care coverage because they have a pre-existing condition, it’s a good thing. And for parents of older children, perhaps even out of college aged children, to be able to know that your child will have health insurance as they step out into the world and make their way, is a good thing.

The Affordable Care Act is not the be all end all. There are still many facets that need clarification and some areas that will need to be modified. But as it stands now, millions of Americans who were once without health care now can get health care, and to me, that’s a GREAT thing!!
