Mamas on Bedrest & Beyond: The Healthy Home, Part II, The Bathroom

April 20th, 2011

Continuing our journey through the book, “The Healthy Home: Simple Truths to Protect Your Family From Hidden Household Dangers” Today we are taking a look at the bathroom. I have to say that I was blown away at some of the hidden toxins in products that I use every day. To reiterate Dr. Wentz’s recommendations: Read product labels and make changes as you can. Even changing one or two items out can have a profound impact on your health. Further, if you are pregnant or have infants or small children, be especially vigilant about what products you use for them.

Dr. Wentz makes the following recommendations:

Avoid phthalates and parabens in products, especially those in young children. Both substances can alter hormone systems and contribute to early pubertal changes in children, especially young girls.

Avoid products that contain formaldehydes and formaldehyde releasing agents. They will be listed as,

  • Quaternium 15
  • 2-bromo-2-nitropopane-1,3-diol
  • Diazolidinyl Urea
  • Imidazolidinyl Urea
  • DMDM Hydantoin

He also suggests avoiding products that contain the following substances, especially around children,

  • Parabens
  • Mercury
  • Lead Acetate
  • Diethanolamine
  • Synthetic Colors (pigments)
  • Propylene Glycol
  • Coal Tar
  • Toluene
  • Phenylenediamine (PPD)
  • Petrolatum

So how did my bathroom fare? I can definitely make some changes. Some products I will change out while others I will limit. It’s entirely up to you, but limiting your exposure to many of the aforementioned substances is really important if you are pregnant or are using them on small children. So take a look at what was in my bathroom. If you have comments or suggestions for changes, share them with us in our comment section and get a free copy of the book! Mamas on Bedrest: Baby Stay Asleep Demo

April 14th, 2011

Since interviewing Beth Jackson-Gagne, creator of the Baby Stay Asleep infant sleep system in a recent podcast and posting an accompanying blog, I realized that I  had no hands on knowledge of the product. So Beth graciously provided me with a demo product. Here is a live, unpracticed, unedited demonstration of the Baby Stay Asleep Infant Sleep System.
